Acolyte is a Greek word meaning “one who follows.” An acolyte wears a vestment called an alb, which means “white.” Acolytes assist in the service by caring for such duties as lighting and extinguishing the candles, receiving the offering plates, and assisting the celebrant ministering at the altar. It is a privilege to be allowed to assist, always serving according to the desires of the priest.

St. Paul’s has several acolytes ranging in age from 8 to 80 plus years.  On Sunday, we assign  two or more acolytes to the 9:00am service.

To serve properly, acolytes must be trained. The goal is to be able to handle all positions—Crucifer, Gospel, Thurifer and Epistle. Acolytes usually begin by carrying the second cross behind the choir, and they work their way up to becoming an Epistle acolyte who handles all the vessels on the altar.
